Hollywood’s unofficial rule is that famous celebs shouldn’t mess with their signature hairdos. Can you imagine Marilyn Monroe without her blonde locks? Or how about Margot Robbie or Charlize Theron? Well, Sabrina Carpenter has just broken the rule and gone from blonde to a new dark black hair look.
For the cover of Perfect magazine, 26-year-old Carpenter is switching up her look, trading her golden locks for short jet black hair in one and longer straight, sharp black hair on another. Her one look leans into a cropped, slightly tousled cut. The other could be described as Bettie Page bangs that look like they belong in a vintage noir film. Both are beautiful, but both make the singer/actress look completely unrecognizable.
Fans of the “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” might need a moment to process the new looks. This isn’t how we’ve seen her over the years. It’s meant to show off her fearless side, and show that she isn’t defined by her hair or her usual style.
Of course, when being blonde is part of your brand, changing it up usually results in some backlash. Thankfully, that isn’t the case for Sabrina Carpenter fans. When the images were shared on Instagram, fans were quick to share in the excitement. “The pictures are beautiful and she looks stunning,” wrote one fan. “That’s hot,” wrote another. One of the funniest comments, however, was, “New look, who dis?”
Of course, there’s a 90% chance that these are just wigs and won’t actually be a permanent new look. Pop stars rarely change up their look so drastically overnight. Not unless there’s a reason to switch up the formula.
Still, the photographs are beautiful and show a very different side to Carpenter. The black hair brings out the color in her blue-green eyes. So, if it is a new look, nobody will be complaining.
The truth is that artists evolve, even if it’s just for a photoshoot. One day, she might be a beautiful, blonde bombshell, the next she’s a gothic pop siren with black nails and a western-inspired fit.
And for a moment, you forget what “normal” Sabrina Carpenter is supposed to look like.
