Actor Jack Nicholson hasn’t made a movie in more than 15 years. And with that, he hasn’t been much in the public eye over that time either. This week, for the first time in a really long while, Nicholson surfaced in public, exiting a New York restaurant, greeting fans and signing autographs. But because we haven’t seen him such a long time, fans were surprised to see the 88-year-old actor now using a cane to walk.
Nicholson appeared at the SNL 50 celebration in February, one of his few public outings in recent years. Before that, he was seen in Beverly Hills in 2024, also using a cane. Fans still talk about 2021, when he turned up at a Los Angeles Lakers game with his son Ray and surprised people in the stands.
He’s also stayed away from acting. His final movie role came in 2010’s How Do You Know, a romcom with Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson that was directed by his longtime friend, James L. Brooks. Since then, he’s kept life relatively private.
Most people believed Nicholson retired 15 years ago, but it seems he hasn’t given up his life in front of the camera just yet. According to Brooks, he is actively reading scripts and could return to acting any day now.
In July, longtime friend Danny DeVito also shared an update while speaking to People. “I just saw Jack a couple of weeks ago. It was his birthday a month ago, and he’s great,” DeVito said.
Nicholson’s rare outing reminded people how much they miss him. It also reminded you that the best fan move can be giving the guy room to breathe.
