Most of us love Christmas for the joy, togetherness, and celebration it brings. But those bothered by the consumerism, loneliness, and stress of it all might find some consolation in knowing they’re not alone. These celebrities happen to hate Christmas, too.
Colin Firth Hates Christmas Despite Love Actually Fame
You’d think that the man who starred in one of the 2000s’ most popular Christmas movies (and at least two other holiday-themed flicks) would be a fan of the season, but Colin Firth is actually one of the celebrities who hate Christmas.
The Love Actually star told The Daily Mail in 2009, “I have a profound loathing of Christmas—it’s sad really. At this time of year, I am careful not to switch on the radio because those novelty jingles make me homicidal and plunge me into the heart of Scrooge territory.”
Christoph Waltz Wishes There Was “No Christmas”
In 2014, Christoph Waltz told an interviewer from Far Out Magazine that he wished there were “no Christmas”.
“That’s my biggest wish, no Christmas,” he shared, continuing, “Because what I was talking about before comes to its unbearable peak over Christmas, and I’m against it. I’m against it even in milder forms, but at Christmas, it turns into mass hysteria.”
In all fairness, we’d probably also hate the season if we grew up with the haunting tale of the Krampus around the holidays.
Diego Luna Slams Christmas Consumerism
Before having children of his own, Star Wars actor Diego Luna never enjoyed the holiday season.
“I hate the wave of consumerism and the feeling that you have to do things that you normally don’t have to do at any other time of the year,” the actor told Celestrellas in 2010.
It certainly doesn’t help that his father never celebrated the holidays when he was growing up, either.
Hugh Grant Escapes Christmas Every Year
Starring in the season’s biggest rom-com in years, Love Actually, should be some sort of indication that you’re at least a little bit into the holiday spirit, right? Well, just like Colin Firth, Hugh Grant is one of many celebrities who hate Christmas.
“The last few years, I have taken Dad to a Muslim country to escape it completely. We both hate Christmas,” he told the Daily Mirror newspaper in 2009.
Karl Lagerfeld Had No Time for Christmas or Holidays
Of course, a conscious loner and self-confessed workaholic like Karl Lagerfeld wouldn’t like this time of year. In fact, Lagerfeld didn’t seem to like any holidays.
He famously told the Irish Independent that “holidays were invented for people who go to the same place every day and do the same thing. They need a break. I don’t need that. I have a lot of variety in my life.”
Lady Gaga Once Declared “I Hate the Holidays”
Based on her antics during a concert at London’s O2 back in 2010, we’d say Lady Gaga has had a Bad Romance with the festive season. The singer literally (yes, literally) bit the head off a Santa doll and declared, “I hate the holidays. I’m alone and miserable, you ******* stuffed little toy.”
Hopefully, her feelings have changed since meeting her soon-to-be hubby, Michael Polansky.
Larry David’s Brutally Honest Rant About Christmas
It’s no surprise that atheist Larry David doesn’t have a taste for the holiday season. He kinda hates everything about it.
“I detest all holidays, but none as much as Christmas,” he wrote in a 2021 personal essay. He went on: “There’s the loathsome music. The movies with their ridiculous, treacly sentiments. The presents—thinking about them, shopping for them (never without resentment), and the attendant pile of garbage that accumulates from opening them, an environmental disaster simultaneously taking place in living rooms across the country.”
Marilyn Manson’s Controversial Take on Christmas
Marilyn Manson doesn’t come across as someone who would enjoy the frills and festivities of the holiday season, and as you probably guessed, he’s not.
Back in 2016, Manson told the Associated Press, “I hate Christmas. Some of my friends celebrate Chanukah, which seems to me to be more conventional and a better holiday because you get more gifts.”
Marion Cotillard Rejected Christmas Traditions as a Child
Marion Cotillard may be a bit of a Scrooge when it comes to Christmas. The actress told Kelly Ripa in 2016 that she didn’t like the holiday from a “very young age” because of the tradition of gift-giving.
“I remember fighting with my mum because I didn’t want to get presents”, she said. “She was very mad at me, and it was a fight every year because she couldn’t stand having me among the kids not having a present.”

Decorating a household for Christmas is stressful enough, but just imagine having to dress up the whole White House for the holiday season. Leaked audio from 2018 revealed that Melania Trump was not the least bit enthusiastic about her task at the time.
You can hear her in the footage saying, “Who gives a **** about the Christmas stuff and decorations?” We wonder if her feelings have changed since then.
Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Christmas Sadness
While we don’t believe Miley Cyrus is one of the celebrities who flat-out hate Christmas, she definitely hates being alone during the season and the greed the holiday can bring out in people.
The singer-songwriter penned a sad song for the season back in 2015 and also shared a post on Instagram in 2016 that read, “Call me the grinch, but Christmas always makes me feel deeply sad. “It is filled with so much excessiveness & greed. I just hope everyone gives the gift of love and acceptance this year to not only their own family but those around the globe who don’t get everything they wished for due to life’s unfair circumstances!”
Noel Gallagher Calls Christmas a “Stain on Society”
Former Oasis band member Noel Gallagher isn’t known for being overly jolly about many things, but Christmas is right at the top of his list of things he’s especially sour about. He made his feelings towards the season absolutely clear in an interview with Far Out Magazine in 2021.
“The entire ******* period is a ******* stain on society, I ******* hate it with a passion.” Enough said.
Ozzy Osbourne Said Christmas Is for “Shopaholics and Kids”
Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne doesn’t mince words whenever he’s asked about his thoughts on Christmas. In fact, he told Louder in 2022 that he wasn’t a fan of the holiday at all and would rather work than have to endure the festivities.
“I’ve been saying to [wife] Sharon [Osbourne] forever, ‘***** Christmas, I hate it.’ It’s for shopaholics and kids and so I’ve always wanted to work through Christmas.”
Professor Green Explains Why He Hates Christmas
The festive season is bound to be a drag if it reminds you of a lost loved one, and that seems to be the case for Professor Green. The rapper’s great-grandmother passed away around Christmas when he was just 13, and he says he has hated the holiday ever since.
“Don’t feel like you have to enjoy it,” he shared in a 2018 Instagram post about the holiday season, continuing: “if you too find it hard, just know that many, many more do. Feel free to have a chin wag in the comments about why. I’m hanging about here for a bit as I’m stuck in bed hating it too.”
Rod Stewart Doesn’t Enjoy Christmas Despite Holiday Album
Rod Stewart has a whole Christmas album, yet somehow doesn’t have a taste for the festive season. His wife, Penny Lancaster, revealed in an appearance on Loose Women that the rock legend is one of the celebrities who hate Christmas.
“Rod doesn’t love Christmas. He can’t wait till the decorations are down and his house is back to normal.” Bah humbug.
