The Wire actor James Ransone has died at 46. Ransone played Chester “Ziggy” Sobotka in the series, a character so irritating, reckless, and emotionally raw that he still sparks arguments years later. Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed Ransone died by suicide on 19 December 2025.
Born in Baltimore in 1979, Ransone grew up close to the world that The Wire later explored. He started acting young, landing a small role in the oddball 2001 sci-fi western The American Astronaut. A year later, he grabbed attention in Larry Clark’s Ken Park, playing a teenager spiraling without a safety net. The performance made people uncomfortable.
By 2003, Ransone joined The Wire and made Ziggy unforgettable.

After that, Ransone stayed busy. Horror fans caught him in Scott Derrickson’s Sinister and later The Black Phone. Spike Lee brought him back more than once for Inside Man, Red Hook Summer, and Oldboy. He popped up in Tangerine as a volatile pimp, then surprised a new generation as adult Eddie Kaspbrak in IT Chapter Two.
His final appearances included a cameo in The Black Phone 2 and a guest role on Peacock’s Poker Face.
Ransone never chased likability. He chased honesty. When you watch his work now, you can still feel it.
