When it comes to fashion and culture, trends are constantly changing, with new looks and innovations shaping the way we dress and what we deem as “cool”. 2024 is obviously not exempt from this, either. In just the last six months, we’ve seen trends that once ruled retreat into obscurity. Here are a few street fashion trends that didn’t make it past 2023 and into 2024.
1. Nike Dunks & Air Jordan 1 Sneakers
Nike Dunks and Air Jordan 1s were everywhere in 2023. You couldn’t turn a street corner without spotting the sneakers. Sadly, once the crowned kings of sneaker culture, the brand and the trend it set has succumbed to its own success in 2024. Oversaturation and a slew of bootlegs (reps – which very closely capture the look of the sneakers at half the cost) proved to be their undoing. Sadly, AJ1s and Dunks (both lows and highs) aren’t street fashion trends that lasted into 2024. The good news is that the Air Jordan 3s and 4s are still going strong.
2. Supreme Clothing
Like the Air Jordan 1s, the oversaturation of the Supreme brand tarnished its image. Where devotees of streetwear and skateboarding once clamoured for its creations, in 2024, the brand’s popularity has dipped significantly. That doesn’t mean it’s completely dead, of course. The brand’s influence on street culture remains undeniable, even in 2024. However, it’s nowhere near as popular as it was in 2023.
3. New Balance 550s
The New Balance 550s were probably one of the biggest surprises of 2023. Who knew that kids from across the globe would line up outside sneaker stores at the chance to grab a pair of “dad shoes”? Yet, that’s exactly what happened. Thanks to TikTok trends, the 550 quickly grew into a must-have sneaker of 2023. In 2024, the fad seems to have faded quite a bit. They’re not nearly as popular anymore. Here is a list of some of the best New Balance 550 colourways of all time.
4. Vans Old Skool
While fashion progresses, some sneakers have survived just about every trend. The Vans Old Skool seems to be such a sneaker. That said, don’t be surprised to see A-list celebrities and maybe even skateboarders dumb the classic look for something more modern this year. 2024 is all about comfort and luxury. And if we’re honest, the Vans Old Skool is more practical than it is comfortable.
5. Balaclavas
After COVID-19, we all became accustomed to wearing face coverings. As it was necessary, many companies found cool ways to make masks fun and funky. But now, years after the tumultuous events of 2020, the world has moved on and returned to “normal”. With the pandemic over, wearing balaclavas is no longer in – or cool – even during the cold winter months. Don’t expect to see this fashion trend in 2024.
6. Chrome Hearts Clothing
The luxury fashion label Chrome Hearts has sold over a billion dollars worth of high-end clothing since it was founded by Richard Stark in 1988. Over the years, the brand has developed into a global fashion powerhouse. However, due to its high prices, we’ve seen a number of knock-offs and replicas circulating the market. The company even recently hit Shein with a lawsuit claiming copyright infringement. While Chrome Hearts is still around, don’t be surprised to see a lot more reps in 2024.
7. Cuban Chokers
Cuban chokers, symbols of a bygone era when they commanded the spotlight from 2017 to 2019, now embrace a metamorphosis. Replaced by diverse link types, shorter chains, or even resplendent pearls and beads, their legacy persists. However, traditional Cuban choker jewellery is a fad that probably isn’t coming back.
8. Yeezy 350s
2024 has been a crazy year for both Kanye West and Adidas. As the company’s fallout with Ye continues, they continue to drop more unreleased stock. Once a billion-dollar brand, the beloved Yeezy (the fashion brand created by Kanye West) has fallen on hard times in 2024 – mostly due to West distancing himself from the newer releases. Yeezy 350s, once the pinnacle of comfort and innovation, are now being sold at half price or on sale.
9. Suicokes
Suicoke sandals, once the quintessential summer staple, surged to the forefront of popular footwear for its comfort and relaxed look. Sadly, the trend is over. You won’t see anyone sporting these in 2024. The “work-from-home” sandal has lost its appeal.
10. Skeleton Print Tees
Remember when it was cool to wear a tee with a haunting skeleton? Well, that’s not a fashion trend in 2024 street culture.
