Even though some of these retirements are still not permanent, it’s undeniable that these celebrities had an irreplaceable presence that leaves some deep marks whenever they chose to retire. Here are 10 actors who quit acting – some forever and some who only returned for a single film.
10. Gene Hackman

More widely recognized for his unforgettable role as archcriminal Lex Luthor in the initial series of Superman films, Gene Hackman ranks as one of the most gifted—and certainly among the most reliable—actors of his generation. Not since the legendary James Cagney has there been a figure who so completely dominates—and, at times, totally disappears into—the roles he plays. Hackman announced his retirement from acting in 2004, citing health reasons and too many less-than-stellar reviews for his films.
9. Frankie Muniz

One of the most recognizable young actors of the early 2000s, Frankie Muniz quickly achieved fame as the star of popular shows like Malcolm in the Middle and the teen comedies Agent Cody Banks. But Muniz’s life has not always been a laughing matter. Actor Frankie Muniz placed his acting career on hold in 2008 as he pursued a dream of becoming a racing car driver. After suffering some truly debilitating mini-strokes in 2012 and 2013, Muniz seemed to have quit acting for good. The good news, though, is that he returned to acting in 2024.
8. Ariana Richards

Ariana Richards was only 14 years old when she found herself captured by the world in the blockbuster hit Jurassic Park. It seemed like she could only build on that success. But Richards wasn’t interested in that path. So she stepped away from acting. The last time she was on film was in 2013, in the direct-to-video Battledogs.
7. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen

For basically their entire lives, the Olsen twins had been doing the thing they are best known for—acting. Mary-Kate and Ashley shared the role of Michelle Tanner and did so for over 190 episodes of the popular sitcom Full House. The twins became landmarks of 90s comedies and kid’s entertainment, featuring in a myriad of videos and TV shows. They quit acting very early, however. By 2004, the twins had left the limelight behind and had turned their creativity in a new direction: fashion design.
6. Amanda Bynes

In the 90s and early 2000s, Amanda Bynes was one of the most defining personalities on Nickelodeon, thanks to her starring turns on shows like All That and The Amanda Show. She also starred alongside several young, undiscovered actors who would go on to become stars themselves—like Channing Tatum, who co-starred with Bynes in the movie She’s the Man. Unfortunately, Bynes did not remain in the public eye long after her Nickelodeon days. After a series of mental health crises and a and public >private struggle with substance abuse, she has taken the last several years off from acting as a
5. Shirley Temple

Since the thirties, the name “Shirley Temple” has been synonymous with child stars in the history of cinema. For all her charm and golden curls, Temple was not just a skilled actress for her age; she was a dancer on an altogether different and even better level. To be a kid in the Golden Age of Hollywood was tough enough; by the time she was twenty, the actress had seen her career dwindle in popularity; she announced her retirement in 1950, at the age of 22.
4. Mara Wilson

Everybody knows Mara Wilson as a lovable, psychokinetic girl in Danny DeVito’s film Matilda. Wilson made some other appearances throughout the 90s in family movies like Mrs. Doubtfire and in the 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street. In 2000, she announced that her last feature film would be Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Since then, she has largely moved her career to stage plays and web series, including voice-over work for animated web projects like Helluva Boss.
3. Jennette McCurdy

Another young star from Nickelodeon that seems to have vanished from the spotlight is Jennette McCurdy. She became a series regular in the very popular show iCarly—a show where she co-stared with Miranda Cosgrove. In 2017, McCurdy surprised her fans by saying that she was retiring from acting. Instead of pursuing a career in front of the camera, McCurdy is working in another capacity in the entertainment industry.
2. Sean Connery

One of the most iconic action stars ever to play the suave agent James Bond on the big screen is, without a doubt, Sean Connery. The actor Connery confirmed in 2006 that he intended to leave acting for good. He expressed his discontent with the Film Industry and named “the idiots now making films in Hollywood” as the principal reason for his departure.
1. Cameron Diaz

It is rather unexpected that Cameron Diaz has bade farewell to the glitzy and glamorous world of an actor’s lifestyle. She has acted in over forty films, so it seemed that she would never step away from the scene. But in 2017, Diaz confirmed that she had not only stopped making appearances in front of the camera but was also ceasing, for the time being, her artistic endeavors. She did reappear briefly in a movie in 2024, but she seems to have returned to that quiet life she is now living. Also, check out our list of 27 Hollywood Actors Who’ve Been In The Most Movies.
