Thirty-eight years ago, a teenage neighbour with bad taste in shoes and zero filter walked onto a TV set — and never really left.
Some characters immediately become fan favorites after only a few brief appearances. It happened to Frank Reynolds, Urkel, Frasier Crane, and Kimmy Gibbler. Kimmy’s rebellious attitude was the perfect foil for the Tanners’ picture-perfect order. Also, her outfits just captured that, let’s say, “unique” taste of the late 80s and early 90s, which made her an immediately recognizable part of the Full House cast.
Andrea Barber infused the character with her over-the-top energy and magnetic personality, turning her into an icon of 90s television. Then, one day, she went quiet – only to come back better than ever.
The TV Career Andrea Barber Had Before Anyone Knew Her Name

Before she joined the Full House cast, Barber had an outstanding trajectory through some of the 80s’ most iconic TV shows. Her first major role was in Days of Our Lives, where she played the original Carrie Brady, before Christie Clark took over as the teenage version of the character.
From Fantasy Island to the Twilight Zone revival, Barber was everywhere in the 80s. She even co-starred alongside acting icons such as Joanne Woodward and Richard Kiley in the Emmy-winning TV film Do You Remember Love. After a string of one-time appearances, Barber finally found her home in 1987, when Full House hit the airwaves.
How a Recurring Guest Spot Turned Into a Cultural Icon

Barber’s Kimmy Gibbler didn’t start as a series regular in Full House – her character was only supposed to be a recurring guest, and that’s how it remained for the show’s first four seasons. It wasn’t until Season 5 that Kimmy became a “main” character in Full House, and she absolutely deserved it.
It soon became clear that Barber had an impeccable comedic timing that worked perfectly with Candace Cameron Bure’s T.J. Tanner. It was that spark that turned her into one of the cornerstones of the Full House formula – a show that could blend heartfelt and important social messages with a good dose of humor.
Why Andrea Barber Walked Away From Hollywood at Her Peak
After 1995, when Full House finished its run, Barber took a step back from the acting life to focus on her education and forging a strong, professional career. In 2002, she married Jeremy Rytky. The couple had two children together and remained together through the rest of the decade.
In 2014, the couple dissolved their marriage, citing a growing personal disconnect. The 2010s were a time of changes for Barber, as she was just about to join what would be an unexpected revival.
The Quiet Comeback Nobody Saw Coming — And How It Worked

Around 2012, Barber resurrected her iconic Kimmy character in a skit for Funny or Die. A few years later, in 2016, Netflix’s Fuller House gave Barber a chance to bring her iconic character back to the mainstream. The series was a major hit for the streaming platform, running for five seasons.
Nowadays, Andrea Barber remains as “Kimmy” as ever. She started the How Rude podcast along with Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie Tanner), a space for the duo to re-watch and discuss episodes of Full House. Her social media shows that she remains in touch with her inner Kimmy – and that she still rocks that iconic look.
