Before you cry blasphemy, this new theory actually makes a lot of sense when you sit back and think about it. There’s a convincing argument that Jesus actually time-travels multiple times in the Bible. And maybe we just didn’t notice it… until now.
The Transfiguration Story In The Bible
If you’re a church-going Christian, chances are your pastor has read Matthew 17:1–9 multiple times over the years. Jesus climbs a mountain with three of his closest disciples: Peter, James, and John. And while they are there with Him, His appearance changes, and His clothes turn a bright white. Then two biblical characters appear alongside Jesus: Moses and Elijah show up. And then a cloud rolls in, and God even speaks to Jesus. And while watching all this, the disciples, of course, go into a complete panic. They can’t believe what they’re hearing or seeing. Their only reaction is to ask Jesus if they can build three temples: one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elijah.
But what if that isn’t exactly the whole story here? What if there’s a lot more going on here.
Raphael’s Famous Painting Captures the Mystery of The Transfiguration
Raphael, the painter (not the Ninja Turtle), painted the Transfiguration event in 1520 in his most famous artwork. It almost seems like he was wrestling with the idea, too. The lower half of his painting shows the disciples’ confusion and their struggle to understand the divine experience they’re seeing or having. The upper half of the painting shows Jesus Christ glowing with light while Moses and Elijah hover beside him.
And maybe just like the disciples, or Raphael, none of us truly understood what took place that day.
Technically, Moses and Elijah Shouldn’t Be There
According to the Bible, both Moses and Elijah lived centuries before Jesus walked the Earth (or so we have been taught). Moses died around the 13th century BC. Elijah disappeared into the sky sometime in the 9th century BC. And yet here they are standing on a mountain years later, talking with Jesus about what would soon happen.
Now, what we’ve been taught is that Moses and Elijah basically descended from heaven to come talk to Jesus. But what if that’s not true at all?
The Traditional Explanation Behind Their Appearance
The usual explanation is that Moses represents the Law and Elijah represents the Prophets. So, their appearance here with Jesus shows that both those elements are fulfilled in Christ, which, of course, is 100% true.
But… Why are they there in person? How do the disciples actually recognize them? And why does the conversation seem to last long enough for Peter, James, and John to fall asleep (maybe die?) and then wake up again?
Something much bigger was happening here.
John’s Gospel Places Jesus Outside of Time
Then, consider what the Gospel of John says about Jesus: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John says Christ was at the very start of creation. He was there all along. He helped create Adam and Eve. Nothing was made without Him.
And if that’s true… then maybe it was Jesus who walked with Abraham. And maybe it was Jesus who appeared in the fire with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Did He wrestle with Jacob?
What If Jesus Stepped Into Their Timelines?
If Jesus existed before time and He moves outside the realm of time, then the idea that he could step into different moments of history suddenly becomes less strange, right? What is impossible with a man who controlled the sea, the wind, and even brought people back from the dead?
So, now… What if Moses and Elijah weren’t visiting from the past at all? What if Jesus briefly stepped into their timelines? Or there was some sort of portal that allowed them to all stand in the same place at the same time, even though they are from very different time periods.
The Shared Mountain Experiences of Moses and Elijah
And the Bible teaches us that Moses encountered God on Mount Sinai surrounded by cloud. Elijah later stood on that same mountain during a violent storm. Also, both these historical figures faced moments where their mission felt impossible. Moses dealt with a rebellious nation. Elijah believed he was the last faithful prophet alive. What if Jesus was encouraging them?
Could the Transfiguration Reveal How God Sees Time?
During an interview, Pastor and author Troy Brewer said: “Jesus himself is a big time traveler.” The proof starts with Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” According to Brewer, time, space, and matter all appear in that first verse. If God created them, then he exists outside them. He doesn’t need to follow rules of time, space and matter. He can bend them to His will.
That changes the way you read the Transfiguration.
Jesus Isn’t Confined To Time
Instead of it just being a simple vision, it could be a rare moment where different points in history actually overlap to reveal Moses, Elijah, and Jesus standing together, not because they were pulled from the past, but because Christ isn’t confined to one timeline.
It’s a strange idea and probably even uncomfortable for most believers. Associating Jesus with anything that sounds like science fiction could be seen as blasphemy to some.
Christ Was More Than Just A Teacher
But Scripture already presents Christ as more than a teacher wandering through Galilee. The disciples saw miracles, exorcisms, and prophecy. During the Transfiguration, they saw something else entirely. The humanity of Jesus disappeared for just a moment.
It Wasn’t Just A Miracle
Peter later wrote about that experience decades afterwards, calling it the moment he witnessed Christ’s true glory. See, something real happened on that mountain. Whether it involved timelines crossing or simply a glimpse into heaven, the event forces readers to rethink how time works in the biblical story.
That story proves that Jesus isn’t limited to time, space or matter.
