Acting is supposed to be pretending, right? You step into someone else’s shoes for a bit, say your lines, hit your mark, and go home. But some actors? They don’t just step into the shoes—they glue them on, live in them, and sometimes completely lose themselves in the process. These ten took things to the extreme in the name of “art”… and maybe a little Oscar-baiting too. In this list, we look at 10 actors who took things too far with their roles.
10. Viggo Mortensen Shattered His Toe for Middle-Earth

Viggo Mortensen didn’t just play Aragorn. He was Aragorn. The guy carried his sword off-set, camped out in the wild, and even broke his toe kicking a helmet in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The scream you hear in that scene? Totally real. But here’s the kicker (pun intended): he once spent a year researching the Vietnam War to land a part in Platoon—only to lose the role to Willem Dafoe. Ouch.
9. Anne Hathaway Went Full Misérable

Anne Hathaway’s Oscar-winning performance in Les Misérables didn’t come cheap at all. To play the Victorian character, Fantine, Hathaway starved herself, chopped off her hair, and locked herself in a room. “I had to be obsessive about it,” she told Vogue. “The idea was to look near death.” Well, mission accomplished, Anne.
8. Adrien Brody Sold Everything for The Pianist

Adrien Brody dropped 14kg (that’s 31 pounds for the metric-phobic), learned to play the piano, and sold his apartment and car to get into the mindset of Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist. He even gave up TV. You know an actor’s serious when they abandon Netflix.
7. Natalie Portman Starved and Spun for Black Swan

To become a ballerina in Black Swan, Natalie Portman spent around 8 hours a day doing ballet and actually lived on a diet of carrots and almonds for a long time. That’s literally what she ate for months. She also dislocated a rib and still kept dancing. Someone, please give her a sandwich.
6. Jared Leto: Oscar Winner by Day, Menace by Night

For Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto dropped 30 pounds and shaved his eyebrows. Then for Suicide Squad, he went full chaos goblin, mailing used condoms, dead rats, and bullets to his co-stars. For a Joker performance that amounted to about eight minutes of screen time. Worst trade deal in history.
5. Jamie Foxx Went Blind for Ray

When filming the Oscar-winning film Ray, comedian and actor Jamie Foxx wore fake prosthetic eyelids that made him unable to see during the shoot. This, of course, triggered feelings of claustrophobia and led to panic attacks. But Foxx pushed through that panic and landed an Oscar. “It was like being in a coffin,” he later said in an interview.
4. Halle Berry Got Dirty (Literally) for Jungle Fever

Spike Lee thought Halle Berry was way too pretty to play a drug-addicted streetwalker in Jungle Fever. He wasn’t wrong. So she stopped showering and hung out in actual crack houses to prove she had the grit. Spoiler: she got the role. Hygiene took the L, but the performance won big.
3. Leonardo DiCaprio Ate Raw Bison for The Revenant

Leo’s Oscar curse ended when he froze, bled, and raw-livered his way through The Revenant. Despite being mostly plant-based, he munched on an actual bison liver and slept inside animal carcasses. “I can name 30 or 40 sequences that were some of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do,” he said. We believe you, Leo. We really do.
2. Christian Bale: Human Yo-Yo

From emaciated insomniac in The Machinist (he lost 63 pounds) to doughy Dick Cheney in Vice, Christian Bale’s body has been through more phases than the moon. He once went from 121 pounds to Batman-ready in six months. Doctors were not thrilled.
1. Heath Ledger Became the Joker… Literally

In The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger’s portrayal redefined the Joker. For six weeks, he locked himself in a hotel, writing chaotic thoughts in a diary. And he tried on voices and laughs until he found the sound for the iconic villain. “He’d walk around in character all the time,” said co-star Michael Caine. The performance was brilliant, haunting, and, tragically, his last.
